Evolution: From Manual Inspection to Automated Drift Detection

The evolution chapter in Volume 1 discussed the problem of spec decay: code changes, but the spec does not keep up, and Agent output quality declines. The solution at that point was manual inspection, because you were still in the loop. You were watching, you noticed the spec was outdated, and you fixed it yourself. Low cost, adequate results.

Volume 2 changes this premise. You are no longer watching in real time. Multiple Agents execute autonomously in parallel. You are the task designer and acceptor, not the process monitor. When you are not present, nobody notices when a spec goes stale. The Agent faithfully executes outdated instructions, producing a pile of code that looks normal but is based on incorrect assumptions. By the time you return to collect results, everything has drifted, and a large amount of work has already accumulated on a faulty premise.

The essence of the problem: the human-in-the-loop maintenance model stops working once the human leaves the loop. The solution direction is to let the system monitor itself. Automated drift detection mechanisms continuously compare the spec against the actual state of the code, proactively raising alerts when inconsistencies appear, rather than waiting for a human to come back and discover them.

This is the core nature of the shift in Volume 2's evolution: from manual inspection to automated monitoring. Volume 1's evolution was a documentation maintenance problem: you find it, you fix it. Volume 2's evolution is a system self-monitoring problem: when you are not present, the system discovers it for you. Every instance of letting go demands that corresponding automation capabilities keep pace. Otherwise, letting go is just losing control.
